Horizontal Blinds Measurement & Installation Guide

Inside (Recessed) Mount Horizontal Blinds

Inside mount refers to blinds that are mounted inside the window opening. This is the most common way to cover windows today and provides a clean, finished look. There is a minimum window opening depth for blinds mounted inside and also a minimum window opening depth for the blind to fit flush with the wall (see chart below).
Product Minimum Depth Req. for Inside Mount Depth Req. for Flush Inside Mount
2" Wood Blinds 1/2" 3"
2" Faux Wood Blinds 1/2" 3"
1" Aluminum Blinds 1/2" 1 1/2"
Steps:
IMPORTANT:  You must use a steel measuring tape for accuracy. If you are replacing existing blinds your measurements must be from measuring the window opening NOT the existing blinds.
1 WIDTH: Measure the width of the window opening in 3 places (top, middle, and bottom). Take the smallest of the 3 measurements (rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch) and record it. This is the width you will order. Do not make any deductions! The factory will make a 1/4 “ deduction from each side to allow room for the mounting brackets and/or to provide space for operation.
2 HEIGHT: Measure the window opening height in 3 places (left, middle, right) only this time take the largest measurement (again rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch). This is the height you will order. The factory will make no deductions or additions to the height measurement.
3 DEPTH ( 2” Wood and Faux Wood Blinds Only): Measure the depth from inside the window opening to the outside trim or molding around the window frame. Subtract this value from 3” and record it. This will provide the “return” for the valance (decorative side that hides the blind head rail).
Notes: For 2” blinds only. Your blind will come with a 3” decorative crown molding type valance that clips to the front of the blind in order to hide the head rail and provide a professional, decorative look.

Keep in mind that any future window fabric treatments applications typically do not present mounting problems for inside mounted blinds should the blind not be a flush mount application.

Outside Mount Horizontal Blinds

1 WIDTH: Measure the width of the window opening from left to right and add 3” to ensure adequate light gap coverage and privacy. If the blind is to be mounted to trim or framing around the window, first locate a flat spot on the trim suitable for mounting the bracket. Next, measure the outer most location on the desired trim mounting surface from left to right and then deduct 1/4" to allow clearance for the brackets. Once you determine the desired width (rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch) write it down. This is the width you will order. The factory will make no deductions or additions to your measurements on outside mount blinds.
2 HEIGHT: To determine the height, measure the window opening from top to bottom and add on average 3" inches to this measurement to allow space for mounting brackets above the opening (again locating a suitable flat surface on the trim) and enough overlap at the bottom to avoid a light gap. You must add at least enough space to mount the brackets above the window. Once you determine the desired height (rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch) write it down. This is the height you will order. The factory will make no deductions or additions to your measurement. If there is trim or framing around the window measure from the trim's outside edge top to bottom and this is the height you will order, provided the trim provides the flat space required for an outside mount.
Notes: For 2” blinds only. Your blind will come with a 3” decorative crown molding type valance that clips to the front of the blind in order to hide the head rail and provide a professional, decorative look.
